Nestlé USA Removing Artificial Flavors and Colors

Nestlé USA has announced that it will remove all artificial flavors and FDA-certified colors from Nestlé chocolate candy sold in the United States. Doreen Ida, President of Nestlé USA Confections and Snacks, says that by the end of 2015 the company will “remove artificial flavors and colors without affecting taste or increasing the price.” This will be accomplished by replacing the artificial flavors and colors with ingredients from natural sources. For example, in the Butterfinger candy bar, Red 40 and Yellow 5 will be replaced by annatto, which comes from the seeds found in the fruit from the achiote tree.

Additionally, Nestlé is actively pursuing the removal of caramel coloring from its products. Caramel coloring is an exempt-from-certification color additive but it is used in 9 of the 250 chocolate products offered by Nestlé.

Going forward, all newly launched chocolate and non-chocolate products (gummies, sours, etc.) introduced by Nestlé USA will be made without artificial colors or flavors.
